CHOKES:

Chokes seem to hold some form of 'Magic Box' status, but there is nothing magic about them at all. They are simply a winding of wire on a magnetic former. If placed close to power transformers they can increse hum, not reduce it. Their laminations should always be at right angles, to the laminations of any transformer near them, to reduce magnetic coupling. A popular misconception about chokes is that they usually have to carry heavy currents.

A quick check of common amplifier circuits will reveal that this is simply not true. The output stage current supply rarely goes through a choke. In amplifiers not using UltraLinear taps the choke will usually feed screen current, and that will need to be considered. In these amplifiers, using screen resistors of a nominal power rating will cause the resistors to burn out before the choke does, if the output bias fails etc. In a nutshell using a choke with say a 100mA will easily meet requirements for a Vintage style tube ampifier especially for guitar.
